Law 10: Infection: Avoid the Unhappy and the Unlucky

An over view of the 10th Law of Power, implies that a person staying in the company of the misfortunate have the tendency to incorporate these feelings or situations of unhappiness and unluckiness into their own persona; therefore dragging them along with the other’s downfall.

A simple analysis of this can be made using a theory of Jean Jacques Rousseau which states, “Man by nature is good.” A study of this was made in the United States; the situation was as follows: a group of more than 10 people, of both genders and varying age groups, were placed in a room together and observed. The experiment gave the impression of man having the nature to help others when capable to do so, without any immediate or noticeable ill-effects.

Taking this given into account, the likelihood of getting “drown in another’s misfortune” is brought to light. This usually starts out with helping the other person and getting so engrossed in it without achieving much change for them that you end up using too much resource bringing you to a similar situation or worse than the person you intended to help.

So does not this law, then seem very inhumane; dictating you to leave others in need when you might have the capability to help? Those deemed unlucky and unfortunate would forever remain that way with nobody to help sort out their problems.

I believe a realistic application of this law would go something along the lines of ‘avoiding the unlucky and unfortunate, whose condition has been caused directly by them’. I see no harm in trying to help those in need when they really have no ability or resource to get them out of such situations; as for those others, their misfortune has themselves as the culprit. Helping out such people will really drag you down; since in a way you are helping the source of their problems, in such cases only they can solve the misfortunes they face.

This law gives a very realistic reason for not helping others who’s undoing have been caused by their own actions. Doing so will only entail upon you the burden they are carrying. Better to place yourself with others in good fortune to maintain a positive aura.

  1. i think, this law does not apply to all. as a leader the very best way to help your people is to be with them (not Avoid them) especiallly when you feel that they are suffering from dissatisfaction and, more than that, to empathize to them. i think this will make them happy or at least encourage to continue with their life.

  2. i agree also that this law isn't applicable to everyone. it's hard to pinpoint those who really are lucky precisely because nobody is perfect. we've all had those days wherein we couldn't really control what was happening, and even if we did have control, there still are many factors that might change our plans.

for me, not helping when you have the capacity to, is bad; helping too much is not good either.hence, one should be able to situate himself when trying to help others in a position wherein he does not give little or too much help. maintaining a balance, for me, is critical when trying to serve others.

  3. Assuming that everything is context-based and time-bound, then it would be very absurd to take this law as true because every single person in this planet has been unhappy or unlucky. And that includes those in power.
Practically speaking of course, it is stupid to go into business with someone with a bad reputation or someone who's always bankrupt. So at a certain extent, this law makes sense. But I still agree with the others that this law does not apply to everyone.

  4. i think this law should be followed sparingly because most of the time, if we take it for example in the philippine context, the masses (unhappy and unlucky) will be your source of power. the unhappy and the unlucky are the people who will be easily swayed and influenced by you because they themselves can't fix their own lives, so they will turn to someone to follow, and that person may very well be YOU.
what we can get from this law is not to get too close to these people you control, for you may be infected by their aura of sadness. misfortune on the other hand isn't a disease. everyone is susceptible to it, it is all a matter of how to deal with it.

  5. i agree that "the unhappy and the unlucky" does give us certain negative energy which might affect us. but i don't think helping them will drag us down unless we allow it to happen. in fact, all they need might just be a little enlightenment and support. :)

  6. Goal-driven individuals should follow this rule. Pessimists (allow me to use the word pessimist as a term for the unhappy/unlucky) affect other people's productivity and therefore affect their results.

However, I agree that some people should not follow this rule, examples are politicans who get their power from the masses, and us, Atenistas, because following this would violate our 'man-for-others' maxim. We should help people to the best of their abilities. I agree with Ms. Zhu, we can get a little dragged down, but it feels good when we change someone's paradigm and enable that person to be more satisfied about life. :D

  7. We must not take this law on the literal. I take it that this law is stating that it is not really to avoid rather to be careful in a sense. From being careful and being able to notice them, people will be able to identify them. With identification or knowledge of the “what-is-happening/present” people are able to conform to it, an adaptation sort of way. This then would lead the people to not be affected by it. To have their guard up and not let the sadness or pity for the unlucky get to them. So it is not necessarily avoiding them, but simply being prepared for such kind of persons. With this some would even still be able to help if they could or wanted to or willing to.

  8. I agree to an extent. The environment we're in can affect us. If you keep hanging out with unhappy people, you might feel unhappy too, just because the people around you are.

  9. only avoid when the person's at fault. help when the environment's unleash their wrath.

Sounds weird, happiness and luck are in the mindset of the person. luck is pure luck; you can't change it. it is a random factor for chances of success. happiness depends on the person's trigger for happiness.

This law is blurry and why should it be called a law for power? I mean blaming other people's unhappiness and unluckiness for your power's downfall? Make them happy then and they might become your allies and increase the power given to you.

  10. One bad apple can ruin the bunch. People might associate themselves with unlucky people, thinking that they could help and at the same time, succeed. But most of the time, this isn't the case. When you decide to help these kinds of people, it's like jumping in to the water without a life vest. They will just pull you down until you're not able to breath. Bottom line, given enough time, their luck will be yours. Having said this, better yet associate yourself with people who are doing well. You can do far more with this kind of crowd than those lowly ones. You can learn and gain power from them thus it is important, choose your friends wisely. It is alright to be a good Christian at times but that's if you do not mind getting stepped on for the rest of your life.

  11. I do not believe that immersing yourself with the unhappy and unlucky will necessarily affect you or pull you down. It's still up to you whether you allow yourself to be pulled down by others. It is only about what you do and how you do it that counts, and not about who you are around.

You would be generalizing things too much if you think that unhappy and unlucky people are infectious.

And also, the fear of being "pulled down" or held back should not stop you from helping or being around these people. What one should be mindful of is how far to go in helping others that will not negatively affect him/her.

Who knows, these 'unhappy and unlucky' people might just need a leader like you to get them back on track.

  13. When a person is still in the process of getting in to power, then I think this law is a must for him/her. The mood of a person is really infectious, and so is his/her fate, so might as well try not to accompany the ill-fated ones.
But, if a person is already in power, then s/he should help those unlucky people. A person is blessed enough to be in power so why not share it to those who are unlucky? I believe that there is no heartless leader. No matter how powerful or greedy he may be, there is still some good molecules circulating in his body. After all, he is already in power, so why worry? Also, if he will help those people, they will become indebted to him and thus, will worship him as their savior. So at the end of the day, he will benefit more.

  15. Look at it this way: How would you feel if NO ONE cared about your misery? The worst type of company that you can get is company that is indifferent. I am reminded here of Anton Checkhov's Misery which is famous for the line, "To Whom Shall I Tell My Grief?" The people in the short story parallelled the coldness of the Russian winter.
If you yourself are unstable, it may be wise to stay away from people that are unstable (since this would be like the blind leading the blind), and stay with happy and fortunate instead. However, staying with company like your own can be very beneficial and intimate since the type of company that you're dealing with know how you feel.
This law may work in the short-run, but in the long-run? I don't think so. One may follow this law, but do guard against insensitivity and indifference. And pain is good, too! Imagine what life would be without physical pain- one wouldn't be able to determine what's too hot and what's too cold for the body. Pain gives us limitations, it tells us when to stop, and it gives us, as mortal beings, essential lessons. Take the case of Gilgamesh, the anthropomorphic king of Uruk, who, after meeting his equal Enkidu, gets humanized and a lot more attached to humanity. Enkidu's death may have brought Gilgamesh misfortune and unrest, but it was for that very event that Gilgamesh returned anew to the city of Uruk, with a lesson that evades us most of the time. And I believe that in learning that lesson, Gilgamesh now has the upperhand on life's unfortunate events.

    It's not too late!

  16. Have you ever felt sad as well, when so many around you are down? I believe it is up to you--up to you to feel sad with them(empathize with them), or worse, to end up in the same, low position they are in(get pulled down)--or up to you to keep feeling the way you originally felt. Now, whether or not you decide to truly empathize with others, I think it is still your choice to not let helping others, or being with people who are sad, bring you down.

  17. I do agree with the majority of the respondents here that this law is not applicable to everyone; in fact, for me, this law is fallacious since it is not that easy to avoid the unhappy and the unlucky. That's why the wheel of fate exists in this world: at one point we are very happy, and at one point we feel down and out.

Avoiding it per se seems to be impossible since you can never predict if something unlucky happen. Well the best way instead is to go with the flow and make a quick remedy of the situation, because you can never predict luck.

  18. Morale... Sounds like a military term that only armies should be concerned of. It's not, actually. You can define morale as the general outlook of a person (or persons)on life's little unpredictables.

This law is applicable to everyone. Leaders to followers. Well, not necessarily to avoid the unhappy and the unlucky, but to simply be immune to their infectious nature and carry on your duties as normal.

No, I'm not promoting callousness, I'm just saying that your morale should not be affected by these people because you need to help them. What good are you, getting carried on empathizing and so on should you choose to do nothing anyway? You'd be too busy being touchy-feely.

Empathize. Fine. But do something about what is impairing these "unhappy" or "unlucky" people...

  19. Isn’t it that in the game of power, one must choose the people he associates with pretty well? If indeed being unhappy and unlucky (consider all the negativity) is infectious, why not stay away from it in the first place? You’ll never have to worry about it anymore (as long as it’s not air borne). Also, why not associate yourself with all the positivity of the world? In that case, one can ensure success.

I agree that this law is kind of blaming the demise of one’s power to the infectious unhappy and unlucky.

  20. obviously, in the end this is mr greene's educated opinion, but i understand why he called this a law instead of a rule. when he tells you to create distance between you and the unhappy or unlucky, it is a relative statement, not literal. essentially, he is saying keep negative or catastrophic energies away from you power base or goals, ie: don't let your alcoholic cousin take your mercedes for the weekend. in other words: don't let known fuckups fuckup what you have goin on...
